There are some events, places, and people in your life that make such an impression
that shape everything you do for the rest of your life. One such event took place when I
walked into my first health food store at the age of 19. (That was quite a few years ago.)
My Mom was the” shake and bake lady” and Cisco was the oil of choice. She loved using
canned vegetables and on occasion frozen ones.
Not knowing anything about nutrition, I walked into this pretty strange store and asked
the owner, what does organic mean? She was happy to answer any of my questions and
then directed me to some books to read. (Adelle Davis to be exact) I got hooked, I don’t
know why, but eating organic, reading labels, juicing green veggies… became my way of
life. At that moment, I became conscious and aware of what foods I was consuming.
About 2 years ago, after travelling from Baltimore Md. where I lived most of my life, to
Denver Colorado, where I now make my home, another event happened, I walked into a
local thrift store. I was looking at children’s books because I believed I had a great idea!
Up walks this stranger who asks me, Do you like children’s books? Are you a teacher?
We struck up a conversation and I discovered that he was a published writer with a love
of children’s books. We talked for hours and I told him about my idea. We were both on
the same page.
Over the next year and a half, with the addition of an incredibly talented young
illustrator, Keith Pacheco, Pass the Colors Please was born.
This journey has only just begun, when I read my book to children, they get excited and
listen very intently, that for me is one of the best confirmations that I am on the right
track!
I have incredible ideas as to where I want this lifestyle concept to go!
